How to Check if Your Loved One Had Life Insurance in Malaysia (Semak Kasih)
One of the most commonly missed steps after a loss is checking whether your loved one had a life insurance or takaful policy. Many families simply don’t know a policy existed — and as a result, significant payouts go unclaimed.
In Malaysia, there are two ways to check: the Semak Kasih portal, a free government-backed service, and Allay’s Insurance Check feature, which reaches out to 15 insurers and takaful providers on your behalf.

What is Semak Kasih?
Semak Kasih is a free online portal operated by the Life Insurance Association of Malaysia (LIAM) and the Malaysian Takaful Association (MTA) that allows family members to check whether a deceased loved one had a life insurance or family takaful policy with any participating insurer or takaful operator.
It is accessible at semak-kasih.mycoverage.my and is available to any Malaysian aged 18 and above.
Allay is a bereavement support app that guides you through everything that comes after loss. The admin, the finances, the grief. So you don't have to figure it out alone.
What Semak Kasih can and cannot tell you
It is important to understand what the portal does and does not do before you use it.
What it tells you:
What it does not tell you:
A result does not guarantee a payout. The portal contains records of policies that may be in force, lapsed, matured, surrendered or already claimed. It is a starting point — the insurer or takaful operator will confirm the status when you contact them.
What you need before you start
Before searching, register for a free account on the portal using:
To perform a search, you will need:
The portal only accepts death certificates issued by JPN. If your loved one passed away overseas, you will need to contact insurers directly.
You are allowed up to 3 searches per day.
Step by step — how to use Semak Kasih
Step 1 — Register
Create a free account at semak-kasih.mycoverage.my using your name, MyKad number, email and mobile number. Verify your account via the confirmation email sent to you.
Step 2 — Log in
Once registered, log in to access the search function.
Step 3 — Submit your search
Enter the deceased’s MyKad number, their death certificate number and upload a clear copy of the death certificate.
Step 4 — Review the results
If a record is found, the portal will display the name and contact details of the relevant insurer or takaful operator. Contact them directly to find out the policy status and how to proceed with a claim.
If no record is found, the portal will display “No record found.” This means no matching policy was identified in the system — though it does not rule out policies with insurers not yet participating in the portal.
What to do if a record is found
Contact the insurer or takaful operator shown on the results screen as soon as possible. They will guide you through their specific claims process. For a full guide on what to prepare and what to expect, see our article on How to Claim Life Insurance After a Death in Malaysia.
An easier alternative
Using Semak Kasih requires you to register, log in, upload documents and then contact each insurer individually — repeating the same painful details multiple times.
Allay’s Insurance Check feature does this for you. We reach out to 15 life insurers and takaful providers in Malaysia on your behalf, so you don’t have to repeat yourself or manage multiple conversations at once. It is one of the first things Allay helps families do when they sign up.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Semak Kasih free?
Yes, completely free. There are no charges to register or search.
Can I search for a living person’s policy?
No. Semak Kasih is specifically for checking whether a deceased person had a policy. A death certificate is required to perform a search.
What if the portal shows a record but the insurer says no policy exists?
This can happen because the portal contains historical records including lapsed, surrendered and cancelled policies. Contact the insurer directly for clarification — they can confirm whether any active benefit remains.
What if I have trouble uploading the death certificate?
Make sure the file is in PDF, JPEG, JPG or PNG format and is no larger than 5MB. If the issue persists, email the Semak Kasih team at [email protected] or call +603 7456 3960.
What if my loved one died overseas?
The portal only accepts JPN-issued death certificates. If the death occurred overseas, you will need to contact insurers directly — or use Allay’s Insurance Check which can reach out on your behalf.
